Life is a race that God has set before each one of us, and how successfully we run that race depends on many factors. To fulfill God’s purpose for our lives, we must run with precision, focus, and intentionality. This is why the Apostle Paul wrote:
Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown. Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air.
1 Corinthians 9:24-26
The race of life is personal. The standards by which my race will be evaluated may be different from those by which yours will be evaluated. For this reason, it is unwise to compare ourselves with others. God has given each of us a unique calling, assignment, and path to follow.
As we run this race, many factors contribute to our success and fulfillment of destiny. These include our relationship with God, obedience to His voice, character and integrity, purpose discovery, right relationships, faith, and perseverance. Along this journey, we will also encounter numerous checkpoints, which I refer to as the valleys of decision. The choices we make at these critical moments will determine whether we align with God’s intended purpose for our lives or deviate from His original plan.
Jesus Christ, the Author and Finisher of our faith, encountered one of these crucial checkpoints during His earthly ministry. After fasting for forty days and forty nights, He was hungry, and the devil came to present Him with seemingly attractive opportunities. These offers appealed to legitimate needs and desires, yet Jesus refused them because He understood their true source and purpose. He possessed the key to destiny alignment and therefore remained steadfast in God’s plan for His life.
Unfortunately, many people arrive at similar valleys of decision and fail to discern correctly. As a result, they miss full alignment with God’s intended purpose and instead follow paths orchestrated by the enemy.
This reminds me of the story of a minister of God who missed his divine timing and direction. He had been planted in a place where he was flourishing and accomplishing great things for God. However, the enemy presented another opportunity that appeared perfect. Unbeknownst to him, “there is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death” (Proverbs 14:12). That seemingly attractive opportunity uprooted him from his place of destiny, leaving him disoriented and struggling spiritually and emotionally.
Time would fail me to recount the many similar stories I have encountered. I have seen individuals regret decisions that led them away from God’s purpose, leaving them with deep pain and a desperate cry for mercy. Some have suffered consequences that could have been avoided had they discerned correctly.
While we may sympathize with such people, the truth is that any of us can make similar mistakes. We all desire what is good, beneficial, and rewarding, and there is nothing wrong with those desires. In fact, God often places great aspirations within our hearts. However, when something appears attractive and beneficial, our human instincts may quickly lead us to conclude that it must be God’s will, when in reality it may not be.
Even the prophet Samuel, a seasoned and anointed seer, nearly made such a mistake when evaluating Jesse’s sons. Therefore, the point is not to condemn those who have made wrong decisions or to assume we are incapable of making similar mistakes. Rather, we should recognize our continual need for God’s mercy and guidance when making important decisions.
The reality is that proper destiny alignment hinges on a key, which I call the key to destiny alignment. With this key, combined with the mercy of God, you will be able to distinguish between opportunities presented by God and those strategically arranged by the enemy. This key is called discernment.
Discernment is essential for properly aligning with God’s plan for your life. It is the God-given ability to recognize what God is orchestrating and what the enemy is attempting to disguise as an opportunity. Without discernment, we risk missing God’s purpose and embracing alternatives that only appear right on the surface.
As we journey through life, we are constantly required to make decisions. However, right decisions are largely dependent upon the ability to discern. Without discernment, we may choose what appears attractive and reasonable, only to discover later that it was never God’s best for us.
If there is one grace believers should continually ask God for, it is the grace of discernment. The enemy understands that when a believer genuinely loves God, it becomes more difficult to lure that person into obvious sin. Therefore, he often employs a more subtle strategy. He presents opportunities that align with legitimate desires, ambitions, and aspirations. If a believer lacks discernment, those opportunities can become traps.
Many people have been swept away because they could not distinguish between the doors God opened and the doors the enemy opened. As they walked through the wrong door, they gradually drifted away from God’s intended purpose, and the enemy began to wreak havoc in their lives.
If you desire to succeed in your walk with God and remain aligned with His purpose, you must continually seek Him for the spirit of discernment. This is not optional; it is essential. If the enemy cannot derail you through sin, he may attempt to do so through carefully crafted opportunities that appear beneficial but ultimately lead you away from God’s perfect will.
How to Grow in Discernment
1. Be Filled with the Holy Spirit
One of the most important ways to grow in discernment is to be filled with the Holy Spirit. The Bible says:
“However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13).
The Holy Spirit sees and knows all things. He knows the end from the beginning. When you allow Him to have full expression in your life and influence your thoughts, He will guide you into all truth. Whenever the enemy attempts to deceive you, the Holy Spirit will expose his schemes and direct you along the right path.
2. Exercise Your Spirit by Praying in Tongues
Your spirit is the candle of the Lord. It is designed to be sensitive to God’s leading and aware of spiritual realities. However, this sensitivity develops as your spirit is exercised.
Just as oil becomes thick and congealed when cold but flows freely when heated, your spirit becomes more responsive when it is spiritually energized. A spiritually vibrant spirit is able to perceive, process, and respond to what God is revealing, making it more difficult for you to be deceived.
One effective way to strengthen your spirit is through praying in tongues. As the Bible says:
“But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit” (Jude 1:20).
As you consistently pray in the Spirit, your spiritual sensitivity increases, enabling you to discern God’s direction more clearly.
3. Study God’s Word
The Word of God is a powerful tool for developing discernment. The Bible declares:
“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).
Many believers are easily deceived because the Word of God has not taken deep root in their lives to the point of producing revelational knowledge. When the Word penetrates your spirit and becomes part of your inner being, it produces discernment.
In difficult situations, the Holy Spirit can quickly bring a relevant scripture to your remembrance, providing wisdom, guidance, and clarity for the decision before you. The more you immerse yourself in God’s Word, the stronger your ability becomes to recognize truth and identify deception.
4. Pray to God for Wisdom
Wisdom and discernment are closely related. When you begin to operate in God’s wisdom, you gain the ability to see beyond natural appearances and evaluate situations from God’s perspective.
When you are presented with multiple options, the spirit of wisdom helps you recognize the path that aligns with God’s will. Rather than relying solely on human reasoning or emotions, wisdom enables you to make decisions that are guided by divine insight. As the Bible says:
When wisdom enters your heart, And knowledge is pleasant to your soul, Discretion will preserve you; Understanding will keep you” (Proverbs 2:10-11).
Therefore, make it a habit to ask God for wisdom. As He grants wisdom, your discernment will grow, enabling you to make decisions that align with His purpose and plan for your life.
5. Humility
Humility is essential for developing discernment. The effectiveness of the Holy Spirit’s guidance in our lives is closely connected to our willingness to remain humble and teachable. To receive direction regarding destiny and purpose, we must be willing to submit to the leading of the Holy Spirit, even when His instructions do not initially make sense to our natural minds.
At times, the Holy Spirit may lead us in ways that seem contrary to human reasoning or conventional wisdom. When pride is present, we are more likely to rely on our own understanding, rationalize situations, and ignore the promptings of God. However, humility enables us to trust God’s wisdom above our own and follow His leading without resistance.
This is why the Bible says:
“He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them His way” (Psalm 25:9).
A humble heart remains open to God’s instruction, correction, and direction. As we cultivate humility, we position ourselves to receive divine guidance and remain aligned with God’s purpose and plan for our lives.

Conclusion
Life is filled with decisions, opportunities, and crossroads that have the potential to shape our destiny. While many of these opportunities may appear attractive, beneficial, and even logical, not all of them originate from God. The believer who desires to fulfill God’s purpose must therefore go beyond appearance and develop the ability to discern the true source and purpose of every opportunity, relationship, and direction that comes before them.
As we have seen, the key to destiny alignment is discernment. Discernment enables us to distinguish between God’s will and the enemy’s deception, between good opportunities and God-ordained opportunities, and between what is merely attractive and what is truly aligned with divine purpose. Without discernment, even sincere believers can be drawn away from God’s plan through seemingly harmless choices. However, with discernment, we can navigate the valleys of decision with confidence, knowing that we are being guided by the Spirit of God.
The good news is that discernment can be cultivated. As we remain filled with the Holy Spirit, exercise our spirits through prayer, immerse ourselves in God’s Word, seek divine wisdom, and walk in humility, our ability to recognize God’s voice becomes sharper and clearer. We become less vulnerable to deception and better equipped to make decisions that align with heaven’s agenda for our lives.
Therefore, let us continually seek God for the spirit of discernment. Let us resist the temptation to rely solely on our own understanding and instead submit every decision to the leadership of the Holy Spirit. When we do so, God will faithfully guide us, preserve us from costly mistakes, and keep us aligned with His purpose.
May God grant us discerning hearts, listening ears, and willing spirits so that, at the end of our race, we can confidently say as the Apostle Paul:
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7).
May we finish our race well, remain aligned with God’s perfect will, and fulfill every assignment He has prepared for us. Amen.
