Undoubtedly, life is a race where everyone runs their unique course toward their goals, aspirations, and purpose. While the metaphor may suggest competition, the race the Lord has set before us is not about outpacing or competing with others. It is a race of destiny—one that is run independently and requires intentionality and purpose.
In the race of life, my starting point and set-out time will differ from yours, just as yours will differ from others. This is why it is unwise to compare ourselves with others. Moreover, no race is without obstacles. Life presents its share of challenges—unexpected detours, failures, and setbacks. These hurdles test our strength and resilience, teaching us invaluable lessons. Overcoming them demands persistence and a mindset that views challenges as opportunities for growth.
Unlike a traditional race, life’s finish line is not just about reaching a destination but about how well you run—adhering to the set rules, growing to reach your potential, and fulfilling your purpose on earth until you meet your Maker. If you haven’t been running your race well by following God’s principles or fulfilling the purpose of your race, this is an ideal time to decide to run differently in 2025. You have the opportunity to make 2025 and the years beyond truly count.
Here are a few things to bear in mind as you run the race of 2025 and beyond
1. Run with Patience
Hebrews 12:1 reminds us: “Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” Running with patience does not mean being slack, but rather understanding that it takes perseverance to obtain God’s promises on a path often filled with trials.
Expect challenges, obstacles, and trials along the way. Setbacks are not necessarily the end of the race but opportunities to learn and grow. Approach each hurdle with faith and resilience, trusting that God’s grace is sufficient to see you through.
2. Run with Grace
The race of life cannot be successfully run without the grace of God. You must daily rely on His grace, not your own strength. Ultimately, this requires walking in humility. As you run this race, do not think you are better than others. Approach every opportunity and achievement with humility and gratitude, knowing fully that you can receive nothing unless it is given to you from above (John 3:27).
3. Run with Your Focus on God
As you run this race, moments of discouragement will arise. Don’t give up. Always set your gaze on God, as instructed in Hebrews 12:2: “Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
4. Run with Purpose and Discipline
The race of life requires intentionality. Define your goals and align them with God’s will. Discipline yourself to consistently take steps to grow spiritually, emotionally, and in other areas of your life. Avoid shortcuts; while they may seem appealing, they often lead to regret. Focus on the race God has set before you, and avoid distractions caused by comparing your journey to others’.
Apostle Paul provides this advice in 1 Corinthians 9:24-27: “Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown. Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.”
5. Maintain a Growth Mindset
Embrace change and view every experience—positive or negative—as an opportunity for growth. Many challenges are meant to prepare you for greater things that the Lord intends to do in your life. Be intentional about growth. Once you understand God’s purpose for your life, strive to grow to fulfill that purpose.
6. Don’t Rest on Past Achievements
While it’s good to celebrate successes, don’t let them make you complacent. There is always more to learn, achieve, and give. As Paul said in Philippians 3:13-14: “Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
7. Run to Please God
Our ultimate motivation should be to please God. As you run this race, strive to live a life that honors and glorifies Him by walking in faith, obeying His Word, maintaining holiness and integrity, and loving others.
In conclusion, the race of life is not about speed, competition, or comparison—it is about running with purpose, patience, and grace, while keeping your focus on God. Every step you take, whether through triumphs or trials, is an opportunity to grow, fulfill your God-given purpose, and glorify Him.
As you journey through 2025 and beyond, remember that the race is uniquely yours. Run it with unwavering faith, discipline, and determination, knowing that God’s grace is sufficient to sustain you. Lay aside every weight, embrace a growth mindset, and press forward with humility and resilience. Ultimately, strive to live a life that pleases God, leaving a legacy of faith and purpose.
May you run well, finish strong, and obtain the eternal prize that awaits those who remain steadfast in the Lord.
